About the Board

A key ingredient to the success of the clinical program at Northwestern Law is the substantial involvement of an SBOC Student Board in all aspects of planning and execution. The Board was voted the outstanding student organization at the Law School in 2000, and the outstanding graduate student organization in all of Northwestern University in 2001. The members of the Student Board are highly-motivated, entrepreneurial individuals who make significant contributions in the area of program content, student and client recruitment, fund raising, public relations, community outreach and the use of technology.

Students seeking joint JD/MBA degrees from the Law School and from Northwestern's nationally acclaimed Graduate School of Management have played a major role in these efforts, but there are always talented second and third year JD candidates ready and willing to shoulder their share of the administrative responsibilities.

A particularly rewarding aspect of the student activity has been to forge a strong link with the graduate business school. More recently, the SBOC Student Board and faculty advisors are exploring ways in which the Law School might ally itself more closely with the University's College of Engineering and Applied Sciences and with the numerous governmental and private sector organizations working to stimulate economic development in the Chicago metropolitan area. This is seen as another way in which Northwestern Law might "give back" to the community and through which its law students can gain valuable experience and professional relationships to help them with their careers. SBOC Student Board members also conduct community workshops and engage in other outreach activities involving small business, entrepreneurship and economic development.
